Movie and Show Posters
This is an ongoing series where I take a movie or show with an aim to convey the theme and story using typography. While simple, each poster involves research into the writing, setting, era, and themes to create a unique minimalist design.
I followed a similar thought process with each piece after, each receiving attention to detail through research, planning, and thought.

Vogon Poetry Hour was a playful nod to an early scene within the movie Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
I chose to use the phrase after sending our different options to several friends and peers. "Vogon Poetry Hour" received instant laugher from each person who encouraged and signalled to me that it was the best choice on my shortlist. I chose Brandon Grotesque as the typeface for the entire poster; I wanted to choose a typeface that captured the author Douglas Adams own words about the guidebook.
Brandon Grotesque captured the description from the movie and book that "Don't Panic" was written in big friendly letters on the back. I customized the typeface in "Vogon Poetry Hour" to elicit a futuristic or space look to it as the movie's setting is in the Galaxy. I chose a dark navy background to give the feeling of space without going stark black, which would feel harsh and counter to the friendly impression that I wanted to imply with the typeface.

Pirate Radio is a movie about a pirate radio station on board a ship anchored in the English Channel during the 1960s.
I wanted to take the well known "It's a pirate's life for me" and use 60s inspired typography and colour. After researching late 60s posters and album covers, I wanted to capture to the spirit of the rock music of the time subverting the gritty nature of the phrase I used as the feature. I then anchored the poster with Futura using a sans serif to create clean lines that didn't clash or take away the 60s inspired typeface of the featured phrase. I moved the film title to a secondary position in the hierarchy to allow the primary expression to be bold and loud with the negative space of the red background to breathe with a vibrant punch.
